Y12 Chemistry Class
I’m sorry I am not in school this week. I intend to be back
on Monday but whilst I am away please use the two hours that you would have
spent with me reading up and making notes on testing for positive and negative
ions. You will need to be able to use these tests confidently to identify a
variety of unknown compounds in a practical assessment in the week before ½ term.
This practical assessment will not contain details on how you carry out the
tests, nor on how to interpret the results – you will need to work this out for
yourself on the day.
You need to be able to test for the following substances,
and write equations for these tests:
·
Carbonate ions (with acids)
·
Sulphate (VI) ions
·
Nitrate (V) ions
·
Halide ions (with aqueous silver ions followed
by aqueous ammonia)
·
Sodium, Lithium, Potassium, Calcium, Strontium,
Barium and Copper ions (with flame tests)
·
Copper (II), Iron (II) and Iron (III) ions (with
sodium hydroxide)
·
Magnesium, Calcium, Aluminium and Ammonium (with
sodium hydroxide, including the use of litmus paper where necessary)
Use your textbook, although I don’t have a copy at home and
can’t give you the page numbers. You should also look at:

If you’re totally stuck I’m happy to help by email.
Yours
Ms Elias
