Cover work for ERA

Dear Year 12,

I am sorry I am not in this morning.  I have a sinus infection.  Please complete the work described below.

All Chemists:
1)    Research and make notes on the following topics and key words:
The shape around each carbon of an alkene, explained in terms of electron pair repulsion.
Stereoisomerism in alkenes
E/Z isomerism
Cis/trans isomerism
Cahn-Ingold-Prelog rules

2)    Learn these terms and explanations.  I will quiz you next lesson.

Don’t forget that that you also need to complete your exam practice questions on radical substitution.  You should make sure you have started this homework by today so that you can go to Science club on Tuesday after school if you get stuck.  (I plan to be in tomorrow)

Just 12c (because you should have had a double)

Complete the worksheet that I have uploaded onto the blog.

Revision resources

Dear all,

Please use the following link to access some revision resources I have collected.

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B970e2T7WXvPaG03TjVuUnJBQnM?usp=sharing

Please be aware that the questions on electron configuration include questions on ionisation energies which YOU DON'T NEED TO KNOW for your January Module 2 mock.

Merry Christmas!

Dear Year 12,

I am still recovering from laryngitis and hope to see you on Monday.

For today's lesson we will be starting a new topic

Module 3 - Periodic table and energy

I would like you to read the spec point below

Periodic trends are first studied to extend the understanding of structure and bonding.

3.1.1 Periodicity
Learners should be able to demonstrate and apply their knowledge and understanding of:
The structure of the periodic table

(a) the periodic table as the arrangement of elements:
(i) by increasing atomic (proton) number
(ii) in periods showing repeating trends in physical and chemical properties (periodicity)
(iii) in groups having similar chemical properties

Periodic trend in electron configuration and ionisation energy

(b) (i) the periodic trend in electron configurations across Periods 2 and 3 (see also 2.2.1 d)
(ii) classification of elements into s-, p- and d-blocks
(c) first ionisation energy and successive ionisation energy, and:
(i) explanation of the trend in first ionisation energies across Periods 2 and 3, and down a group, in terms of attraction, nuclear charge and atomic radius
(ii) prediction from successive ionisation energies of the number of electrons in each shell of an atom and the group of an element

I would like you to make notes on the above points ready for Monday's lesson. On MOnday I will give you some exam style questions to test your understanding.

I would use the Chemguide website which always has lots of information to help you understand.
Also Khan academy do some really good videos that explain different concepts in chemistry.

Hope you all have a good weekend

Many Thanks

Miss Chauhan

Chance to spend two weeks at CERN this summer!

New summer camp for high-school students at CERN
S’Cool LAB Summer CAMP is an opportunity for 22 high-school students (aged 16-19) from all around the world to spend 2 weeks exploring the fascinating world of particle physics. The first S’Cool LAB Summer CAMP will take place from 23 July to 5 August 2017.

If you  want to spend their summer at S’Cool LAB, CERN’s hands-on particle physics learning laboratory, for an epic programme of lectures and tutorials, team research projects and visits of CERN’s research installations, please visit the S’Cool LAB website to learn more about the camp, and how to apply
