Year 12 work today

Apologies I am not in today.  I hope to be back in school ASAP.

Please have a go at the past paper questions in the resources folder.  This is on top of the questions I asked you to complete for today.

In our lesson tomorrow I will check you have completed all the questions and you can ask me about anything you found difficult.

Thanks,
ERA

Qualitative Tests for Ions

Dear all,

I found this....

http://www.rsc.org/learn-chemistry/resource/res00002201/qualitative-analysis-a-guide-to-our-practical-skills-quizzes#!cmpid=CMP00007454

It has links to cool videos and I've requested some logins so you may access the quizzes etc to check that you understand it all.

Ms Elias Absent until 08/02/2016

Y12 Chemistry Class
I’m sorry I am not in school this week. I intend to be back on Monday but whilst I am away please use the two hours that you would have spent with me reading up and making notes on testing for positive and negative ions. You will need to be able to use these tests confidently to identify a variety of unknown compounds in a practical assessment in the week before ½ term. This practical assessment will not contain details on how you carry out the tests, nor on how to interpret the results – you will need to work this out for yourself on the day.

You need to be able to test for the following substances, and write equations for these tests:
·         Carbonate ions (with acids)
·         Sulphate (VI) ions
·         Nitrate (V) ions
·         Halide ions (with aqueous silver ions followed by aqueous ammonia)
·         Sodium, Lithium, Potassium, Calcium, Strontium, Barium and Copper ions (with flame tests)
·         Copper (II), Iron (II) and Iron (III) ions (with sodium hydroxide)
·         Magnesium, Calcium, Aluminium and Ammonium (with sodium hydroxide, including the use of litmus paper where necessary)

Use your textbook, although I don’t have a copy at home and can’t give you the page numbers. You should also look at:
·         http://www.ocr.org.uk/Images/208563-identifying-unknowns-delivery-guide.pdf (some parts of this document)
If you’re totally stuck I’m happy to help by email.
Yours

Ms Elias

Can't get enough of chemistry?

There are many opportunities for you to experience and learn more about Science (and Chemistry in particular) outside school.

Please have a look at this document for ideas on what you could be doing in your own time!

Extra fun question on the Group 2 metal Beryllium

You can ignore Qd, g and h as we haven't covered enthalpy changes yet...
